This project started back in 2011 when we bought a plot of land on the shore of Lake Biwa, in Shiga, Japan. The 1st phase of the project was to take down an old four-bedroomed house that used to be a pension. This I did by hand to save the as much wood as possible, recycle as much of the other materials as possible and minimise costs. It was also a great challenge – to pull down a house by hand in 5 weeks (my summer holiday).
This is all documented in my first blog which I plan to continue here on WordPress.

The goal is to build a house with as many earth-friendly features as possible that will inspire and educate.
From now, the foundations are due to start going in this month (February 2013) and in April the main building phase, we hope, will then start. After that the next major deadline is to get the house and roof up with the 4.8kw solar PV system installed to meet the Japanese Governments current feed-in tariff regime of paying 42yen per kw hour for the next ten years. And also, to start producing our own power ASAP.
I hope that I will be able to maintain this blog and post at regular intervals.
